Countdown to launch!
It’s now only four days to go until the launch of Unravelling! It’s getting very exciting. Most of the arrangements are in place. Books, posters, balloons, a display of knitwear (by my wonderfully talented friend, Jackie Stringer) to represent Vanessa’s work are ready. Glasses, wine and nibbles for those all important refreshments are in hand. The students who are reading their work are all geared up. I can hardly wait.
Last night I went to hear William Boyd at the first event of the first Chipping Campden literary festival (where I’m talking on Friday!) Despite enjoying his writing, I went reluctantly – too little time, too much to do, too tired – but I’m so glad I made the effort. He is an excellent speaker. He talked for an hour and twenty minutes (with questions) and every moment was interesting and enjoyable.
I have heard lots of writers talk about their work before, but he was particularly good – full of thoughtful comments about the process of writing, reading, novels and how he works on his ideas, the importance of narrative, the difference between novels and short stories. He recommended Anton Chekov. I’m going to the library today for my poetry group, so I’ll see if I can get a copy of his short stories.
